About this tool
Distance & Area Calculator measures straight-line distances and the area of any shape you draw on a map. Choose Distance to measure a path, such as the distance between two cities or along a running route, or Area to outline a plot of land, a field, a garden or a building and get its area and perimeter. Load the satellite map, click to drop points, and drag any point to adjust it; the results update instantly in kilometres, metres, miles, feet or nautical miles, and in square metres, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometres or square miles. You can also skip the map entirely and paste a list of coordinates, in decimal or degrees-minutes-seconds format, which is handy for survey points or GPS readings. Distances are calculated over the curved surface of the Earth (great-circle distance) and areas on the same model, so results stay accurate over long distances. This is “as the crow flies”: it does not follow roads. The map loads only when you ask for it, your points stay in your browser, and the only thing sent anywhere is an address you choose to search for.

Distance measures a path; area measures the inside of a shape and its perimeter.
Search for an address or use your location to jump straight to the spot.
Drop points along the route or around the edge. Drag a point to fine-tune it.
Switch units at any time and copy the result. No map? Paste coordinates instead.
Measure a route, or outline a plot to get its area and perimeter together.
Uses great-circle maths on the Earth’s curved surface, not a flat-map estimate.
Kilometres, miles, feet and nautical miles; square metres, acres, hectares and more.
Paste coordinates in decimal or degrees format and measure instantly.
From farm fields to flight paths
Check the approximate area of a plot before visiting or buying.
ExampleA buyer outlines a listed plot on satellite view and finds it is about 0.24 acres, not the 0.3 advertised.
Work out how much turf, seed or fertiliser you need.
ExampleA homeowner measures a lawn at 180 m² before ordering turf rolls.
The perimeter tells you how much fencing a field needs.
ExampleA farmer measures a paddock perimeter of 640 m to price new fencing.
See how far apart two places are as the crow flies.
ExampleA traveller checks that Delhi to Mumbai is about 1,150 km in a straight line.
Estimate the flat footprint of a roof or open area.
ExampleAn installer measures a 95 m² flat roof footprint before a site visit.
Measure lakes, parks and countries for school projects.
ExampleA student measures the area of a local lake for a geography assignment.

Points are placed exactly where you click, so zooming in makes boundaries far more accurate.
Drag any point to adjust it instead of starting again, or use Undo to remove the last point.
Satellite images can be slightly offset. For land registration or disputes, rely on an official survey.
A sloped roof has more surface than its footprint. Add allowance for pitch when estimating materials.
Paste them under “Type or paste coordinates” to measure without clicking on the map.
