About this tool
Base64 Encode/Decode is a free, browser-based tool that encodes text to Base64 or decodes Base64 back to text. Base64 converts binary or text data into an ASCII-only string using 64 printable characters, which makes it safe to transport through systems that only handle plain text — email MIME bodies, HTTP Basic Authentication headers, data URIs, JWT segments, and JSON payloads. Toggle between encode and decode mode, paste your input, and read the live output instantly. Invalid Base64 input shows a clear error rather than producing garbage output. Everything runs locally on your device, so your strings are never uploaded to a server. There's no sign-up, no watermark, and no limit.

Toggle between encoding text to Base64 or decoding Base64 back to readable text.
Type or paste the text to encode or the Base64 string to decode.
Watch the result appear instantly as you type. Invalid Base64 shows an error.
Click copy to send the encoded or decoded output straight to your clipboard.
Safely encode text or decode hashes with accurate, standards-compliant Base64 conversion in both directions.
No software installation required. Everything runs locally, so conversion works without a backend or API key.
No hidden limits or premium paywalls. Encode and decode as many strings as you need, as often as you need.
Base64 Encode/Decode processes your data locally in the browser. Nothing is uploaded, tracked, or stored — your files never leave your device.

Encode assets as data URIs or decode encoded payloads when debugging front-end and API code.
ExampleDecode a data URI in a stylesheet to see the original image source, or inspect an encoded API request body.
Inspect HTTP Basic Auth headers and JWT segments to verify credentials and claims during development.
ExampleDecode an Authorization header to confirm the username and password pair your client is actually sending.
Encode and decode email attachments and message parts that travel as Base64 within MIME structures.
ExampleDecode a Base64 email attachment body to recover the original file when troubleshooting delivery issues.
Safely store binary blobs inside text-based formats like JSON, XML, or SQL without corruption.
ExampleEncode small binary payloads before inserting them into a JSON column, then decode on read.
Decode Base64 values found in API responses, cookies, and log entries to understand what they contain.
ExampleDecode an opaque session cookie value to reveal the underlying user identifier and expiry data.

Base64 is reversible by anyone with no key. For confidentiality you need real encryption such as AES, not encoding.
After encoding, decode the result and compare it to the original. A round trip catches silent corruption early.
Standard Base64 contains '+', '/', and '=', which are unsafe in URLs and filenames. Use the Base64URL variant in those contexts.
Base64 adds about 33% overhead. For large payloads, transmit raw binary instead of inflating it through encoding.
Encode UTF-8 bytes, not raw characters. Skipping the UTF-8 step is the usual cause of mangled non-ASCII output.
Line breaks and trailing spaces pasted from logs or emails commonly break decoding. Trim the input first.
Content you decode from an external source may be malicious. Never execute or render decoded data without validation.
For bulk file conversion, use a language library or streaming tool. Browsers are ideal for quick inspection, not batch jobs.
Bookmark Base64 Encode/Decode so decoding a header, cookie, or token during debugging takes seconds.

Preview snippets instantly, debug them with a console, test responsive layouts, and understand why a sandboxed preview matters when you paste code from the internet.
